Real-Time Clinical Data Exchange and Streaming Systems

Technological advances, most recently driven by modern mobile devices, have transformed the way society uses the Internet. Real-time streaming data sources are proliferating and are expected to grow significantly. Streaming systems in healthcare make clinical data available in real time for immediate consumption, enabling real-time decision support, telemetry, remote patient monitoring, and other applications that demand or would benefit from real-time information. The considerable latency of conventional clinical data repositories necessitates a complementary approach that delivers data in live flow as it arrives from the sources. In streaming systems, raw data are presented in a more immediately consumable form, ready for both operational and analytical use. These complementary systems currently remain separate from the clinical repository in terms of development, deployment, operation, and support.
